What will micromobility look like in 2022?

January 11, 2022

What does the future hold for micromobility in 2022? The beginning of the pandemic may have been tough, but micromobillity operators were patient and saw an increase in usage in 2021. For example, e-bike sales grew by 240 percent from August 2020 to July 2021. That sets up for a potentially great year for micromobility companies and users.

Here are three things we think will happen for micromobility in 2022.

1 – E-bikes will continue to grow in popularity

Segway is a major supplier of e-bikes and e-scooters to micromobility companies, so it’s a good company to follow to know what’s going on with demand. It has seen an increase in demand for e-bikes from its corporate customers.

E-bikes are popular for several reasons. The United States is offering $900 off an e-bike through subsidies, which is attractive to buyers.

Bike shares are also becoming more and more popular in cities. That makes sense when you consider governments are thinking of ways to lower emissions and improve the environment. Micromobility is a great way to do that because it can help move people around without harming the environment.

2 – Micromobility gets smart

Like cars, trains, and other vehicles, micromobility vehicles are getting smarter as newer generations are manufactured. For example, scooters are equipped with camera systems that show when scooters are on a sidewalk illegally or coming too close to pedestrians.

There are also micromobility vehicles that use location-based approach systems to help riders get to where they are going or locate e-bikes or e-scooters.

3 – Sensors open possibilities

Companies are also looking to add computer vision-based systems. Sensors can help e-bike riders navigate, provide images like dash cams, and provide critical information like bike maintenance and road conditions to manufacturers and governments.
